Ford Motor Chairman and CEO William C. Ford Jr. wants his car company to be ready for much pricier gasoline, boosted perhaps by increased oil demand from emerging markets such as China. One day, he says, gas prices may be far higher than American consumers are used to. "That's not unreasonable to assume," Ford says. So, he brought to the 2004 New York Auto Show a batch of superefficient Ford Escape gas-electric hybrid SUVs, which were available for drives around town to demonstrate their fuel economy.

To add to the sizzle at the New York show, Ford had celebrities such as actor Kevin Bacon go for a spin. And after a day of fighting Big Apple traffic, the hybrid Escapes still boasted 38 miles per gallon -- a better than 50% improvement in fuel economy compared to the stock Escape.

He plans to launch a hybrid version of the Mercury Mariner SUV by 2007 and another shortly after that. Says Ford: "My expectation is that we will ultimately do a hybrid on a larger vehicle."

Computer-aided-design tools are getting so cheap and powerful any metal-bending firm can find its inner Frank Gehry.

Scrounging for work in May at an industrial design convention in Pittsburgh, Brian Case scored a coup: a deal with Confederate Motor Co. to pump out computer-aided drawings for a new $45,000 bike, the Wraith. Case had one serious problem, however. He didn't own a computer-aided design, or CAD, program.

He set off through the expo in search of one. He shunned better-known programs, such as Dassault Systèmes' SolidWorks and Ashlar-Vellum, because their on-hand staff seemed content selling strictly on name. A good rapport with a representative from a little company called Think3 led him to plop down $4,500 for a year of its Thinkid program. Think3's free training classes and comprehensive in-person help trumped any brand-cachet issues. "I felt totally supported with them," he says.

Case mastered Thinkid in two weeks and finished the drawings by Aug. 10. As he worked, the changes to his precise three-dimensional models were reflected instantly in the engineering and two-dimensional CAD files, the working drawings for the motorcycle's assembly. Using Thinkid, Case changed the bike's backbone from an unwieldy 4-inch-wide aluminum tube to a seamless carbon fiber piece weighing 14 pounds. The first 120hp Wraith rolled out Aug. 30, and Confederate was beyond satisfied with Case: The company credits him with 50% of the bike's creative design and signed his four-person firm, Foraxis Design, to a three-year contract.

In the past small-scale designers like Brian Case never could afford the cost or learning time required to work with high-end CAD software. The power to make rapid, wholesale modifications in 3-D rested mostly with big architecture firms or companies the size of Boeing, which designed its entire 777 digitally using Dassault's Catia software. High-end CAD programs can take years to master, making defections of skilled employees especially damaging and leading companies to pay upwards of $120,000 a year for CAD mercenaries with little in the way of real engineering skills.

That's all changing. Small and midsize businesses, many facing product and project complexities a bit less thorny than those in the 777, are enjoying a democratization of sophisticated 3-D design. New brawny applications take full advantage of today's cheap Intel-based servers and are at the right price--low--with interfaces so intuitive that CAD novices, especially mechanical engineers, can swiftly pick them up.

Sales of CAD software to midsize companies are growing 15%, while large-company sales are expanding at a piddling 5% a year, says Gearoid Smyth, global marketing director of PTC, a CAD maker formerly known as Parametric Technology. Every year another 5% of the 1.2 million 2-D CAD users in manufacturing migrate to 3-D. Privately held Think3 expects its revenue to increase 40% this year to $50 million. Middle-market manufacturers make up 80% of its 5,000 customers.

CAD's bigger players have noticed the midmarket surge. Dassault's Catia line now comes in a slimmed-down version geared toward smaller customers for $12,000, compared with a typical Catia package price of $25,000. Autodesk's 3-D modeling product, Inventor CAD, can be had for $5,200 a chair, not much more than its mainstay 2-D product, AutoCAD. The entry-level version of PTC's Pro/Engineer Wildfire runs $5,000.

The productivity gains from some of these integrated 2-D/3-D software packages can be staggering. In the past a product's shape alterations would be hammered out by designers in a surface-modeling program, a tool that allows for easy curve design and concept change. That 3-D data then got plugged into a solid-modeling program where engineering parameters such as material, thickness and structure were assigned to the shape. That transition could take weeks, making even small design changes exorbitantly costly.

But modifications are far easier in programs such as Think3's. Designers can type in descriptors such as "sharpness" or "acceleration" (which refers to a curve's severity) and watch as the lines of a sports car or tea kettle automatically undulate.

Boeing is again using Catia software for much of the structural design of its new 7E7 jet, but it is using Thinkid for the plane's cabin plans because of the software's flexibility in making changes. Boeing engineers have laid out more than 1,000 cabin variations thus far.

The descriptor capabilities come from a European design project called Fiores II that Think3 participates in along with companies such as BMW and Pininfarina, a Ferrari design firm. Fiores II is an effort to develop software standards that will retain a design's intended esthetic, if not its exact shape, when being altered in the engineering process.

Many new CAD programs are also being bundled with product-management programs that allow for on-the-fly updating of a bill of materials. For instance, when a product's aluminum surface is shrunk or bent, the amount of on-order aluminum sheet metal changes instantly. In the past materials were painstakingly tracked by hand or by programs that required separate entries.

PowerSki International, a San Clemente, Calif. firm, used PTC's Wildfire to design its Jetboard, a $6,000 surfboard-shaped craft powered by a 45hp engine capable of 40mph. The 3-D CAD's flexibility let PowerSki engineers almost eliminate the need for pricey prototypes.

Moving all 23 designers at Michael Graves Design Group to Thinkid has cut by 20% the design time for products like teapots and wall clocks sold at Target stores. "That's really important when you're developing 80 to 100 products a year," says Donald Strum, senior director of product design at Graves. Universe Corp. in St. Louis, which makes cladding for buildings such as the Staples Center in Los Angeles, hooked up with Think3 two years ago. Customers once waited an average of six weeks for delivery after a building was measured. Engineering the panels in 3-D CAD halved that wait.

Design pro Brian Case estimates that going 3-D with the Wraith bike slashed the number of parts by half, to 70. The 3-D visual allowed him to eliminate redundant fasteners and bolts as well as structural members that could be combined into one part instead of several needing welds. "Now you drop the motor into the frame, attach a couple of bolts and you're done," Case says.

Confederate now offers clientele the option of customizing a bike online so that it better fits the buyer's height and weight. "We now can create a man-machine interface that's as symbiotic as possible," says Confederate Chairman Matthew Chambers. Why not, if you can afford it? Customizing adds only $10,000 to the price tag.

New Modem May Offer On-Road Connectivity

NEW YORK - A top networking gear producer plans to offer a speedy new cellular technology that's an alternative to DSL and cable Internet access with the added advantage of being available on the road.

NetGear Inc. is designing a cheap broadband modem for use with a long-range wireless data service called Flash-OFDM that is currently being trialed by Nextel Communications Inc., T-Mobile International and Vodafone PLC.

The hardware would interconnect Flash-OFDM, which was developed by startup Flarion Technologies Inc., with personal computers and networks using Ethernet or Wi-Fi technology.

NetGear also may develop a card for laptops that would enable mobile access using Flash-OFDM.

The announcement, planned for Monday, may be a sign that Nextel or another major cell phone company is preparing to move beyond trials to full deployment of the Flarion technology.

Without a commitment from at least one service provider, equipment makers such as NetGear are generally hesitant to invest in launching a new product based on a nascent technology. Otherwise, there would be no use and no customers for the product once it's introduced.

Both NetGear and Flarion officials declined to comment on any potential carrier commitment, though Flarion president Mike Gallagher asserted that, "we will have commercial operators in 2005. We'll know soon enough."

Nextel won't discuss any plans for Flarion beyond the current trial in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina.

It is no secret, however, that Nextel wants to replace its slowpoke data connection before its coveted legions of high-revenue business users can be lured by fast new services at Verizon Wireless and other rivals.

Coming just a week after Siemens AG (news - web sites) of Germany said it will build network equipment based on Flarion technology, the NetGear announcement also may place more pressure on telephone and cable TV companies to enhance their wireless offerings.

Notably, SBC Communications Inc. planned to announce Monday that its 4.3 million DSL subscribers will be offered free Wi-Fi access at 3,900 hot spots until mid-April, and afterward for just $2 a month.

Meanwhile, the speed and mobility offered by emerging technologies like Flash-OFDM and other robust relatives of Wi-Fi also raise some questions about whether the Bell phone companies may be late with their multibillion dollar plans to replace copper lines with lightning-quick fiber-optic cables.

Flash-OFDM, which stands for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, has other attributes beyond speed: It was designed to work well in moving cars and trains while requiring less spectrum than some wireless technologies.

But despite the appeal, it's not clear whether the price will be low enough to get consumers and small businesses to cut the cord on their DSL or cable service, which typically cost $30 to $40 for unlimited usage.

The lowest rate Nextel charges for unlimited use of the Flarion service is $50 a month, and that's discounted for the trial from a list price of $60.

And while Flarion, Nextel and NetGear are positioning Flash-OFDM as a viable alternative to DSL and cable, Verizon Wireless has largely downplayed the notion of relying on its high-speed data service, which uses the EV-DO standard, as a primary Internet connection in a fixed location.

Instead, with $1 billion earmarked for EV-DO deployment, Verizon is positioning its service as a premium product at $80 a month for unlimited use.

Efforts to price high-speed wireless more cheaply have failed. In March, a startup named Monet Mobile Networks using the same technology as Verizon filed for bankruptcy after signing up just 3,000 customers at $40 a month in eight Midwestern cities.

"People want ubiquity because it's easy. They don't have to think about whether this is a hot spot, or if they need to input a user name or a credit card," said Susan Simmons, an industry consultant for The Management Network Group. "But ultimately, those services are expensive, so I think it will be challenging to have a significant number of users pay those prices vs. free Wi-Fi services in places and BlackBerry" wireless e-mail devices.

For the same reasons, Simmons expects that Wi-Max, an emerging standard that's drawn prominent backing from Intel Corp., will be limited in the near term to fixed locations rather than mobile use.

Clearwire, led by billionaire Craig McCaw, recently launched a wireless precursor to Wi-Max in Jacksonville, Fla., charging homes and businesses from $25 to $35 a month.

The Nextel Flash-OFDM service, priced between $35 and $75 a month, is offered with minimum download speeds ranging from 750 kilobits per second to 1.5 megabits per second (1,500 kbps), and occasional bursts of up to 3 mbps. Uploads range from 200 kpbs to 375 kbps with bursts of 750 kpbs.

That's at least on par with entry-level DSL or cable broadband, which generally top out at 1.5 mbps under optimal conditions, and competitive with premium versions of those wired services.

It's also faster than EV-DO, which Sprint Corp. is also deploying. Verizon, a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone, is promising EV-DO downloads of 300-to-500 kbps.

There also may be obstacles for Flarion and other technologies in terms of how much spectrum cell phone companies can afford to devote to wireless data and Web surfing before it encroaches on their capacity for voice calls.

About 2,000 people are using the Flarion service in the North Carolina trial, which began in February with leased spectrum covering 1,300 square miles, so a launch in a larger, more crowded market using Nextel's own spectrum might prove more challenging.

New Pickup Makes Hummer Look Rather Puny

DALLAS - This one could make the Hummer look like a girlie car. International Truck and Engine Corp. is producing what it calls the world's biggest production pickup, a 14,500-pound monster capable of towing 20 tons.

"It's a super head-turner," said Ken Wallace, an International dealer in Fort Myers, Fla., who has been driving one for about two weeks. "Other motorists hang out of their cars to take pictures of it."

But does anybody really need a vehicle that is nine feet tall, eight feet wide, 21 1/2 feet long and gets about seven miles on a gallon of diesel?

Rob Swim, International's marketing director, said the 5-passenger CXT will appeal to image-conscious contractors, roofers, landscapers and other small-business owners who can use the towing power but also want to draw attention to themselves.

"This truck is for businesses that want to make a bold statement," Swim said. "It's for business people that want to promote as much as perform."

International, the operating division of Warrenville, Ill.-based Navistar International Corp., makes the CXT at its Garland plant. The mayor and many of the plant's 700 employees attended an official CXT unveiling Thursday, although the truck has been in production for several weeks.

International makes about 85,000 commercial vehicles a year, from dump trucks to school buses. But it hasn't made a full-size pickup since the 1970s.

From the front, the CXT looks identical to International's other heavy trucks. International added a pickup bed to its truck chassis and dressed up the cab. One interior package includes leather seats, wood grain trim, a drop-down DVD player, satellite radio and a rear-mounted camera.

But without question, the most noteworthy thing about the CXT is its size. It weighs nearly twice as much as the Ford F-350 Super Duty pickup and is more than two feet taller. It dwarfs full-size sport-utility vehicles.

International says the CXT is the heaviest production pickup out there and boasts the most towing capacity. It comes with all-wheel drive, air brakes, a 70-gallon fuel tank and a bed that tilts back like a dump truck.

The price is also big — $93,000, but options can boost that to $115,000. Some other large pickups cost under $30,000.

Company officials say they expect to sell nearly 100 this year and 500 next year.

Swim said the company isn't marketing the CXT as a consumer vehicle, although he added that drivers don't need a commercial license to get behind the wheel.

"Anybody can lease a Hummer now for $500 a month. Soccer moms are driving them," he said. "This is not a soccer mom's vehicle."

Environmentalist Russell Long of the Bluewater Network says that, with over 30 million cars on California's roads every day, this is an important first step:

"California represents about 2% of global warming emissions altogether.

"As air temperatures increase, we have greater smog and greater smog also leads to a greater incidence of asthma and respiratory infection and premature death."

"I would guess less than 10% are true off-roaders. I would say 60% are couples that are between 35 and 55. Another 10 or 20% are single men who just need a 'chick magnet'."

While the Bill's sponsors try to slam the brakes on SUVs being part of the nation's largest vehicle fleet, it is unlikely that Californians as a whole will end their love affair with the gas guzzlers any time soon.

I must disagree with Dan Holmes - SUVs are safer, but only for the driver. Everyone else is considerably less safe. Old Volvos had the same problem over here; they were safer for the driver, but being built like an APC they caused 50% of pedestrian deaths in road accidents while accounting for less than 10% of the cars involved in such.

I've had an SUV for my entire driving career, and after a brief stint driving a car, found it hard to give up the space and sense of security that comes with driving a larger vehicle. No one complains when someone is driving a Bentley or Rolls, cars that get far worse gas mileage than any SUV could come close to. I know driving an SUV is hard on both the wallet and the environment. Still, I can't imagine driving anything else. It's an addiction that's unlikely to die down in America anytime soon.

SUVs are a national embarrassment. They were created to get through a federal loophole about truck sizes and gas mileage requirements. They are not safer. The rapid growth of the Chinese economy is causing some concern around the globe. Other countries fear they will soon no longer be able to compete. It's a revolution based on a limitless supply of manpower.

Watch out Japan and the US; China already has the world's third biggest economy... and it just keeps growing.

The Hummer H2 is a status symbol

In Beijing this summer the latest fashion statement is a Hummer H2.

For the uninitiated a Hummer is an enormous gas guzzling American 4X4.

It's about the size of a small house. Just the thing for running around a congested city of 14 million people!

"That has to be the stupidest car on the planet!" I commented to a Chinese friend on seeing yet another one blocking up a Beijing street.

"I can't understand why anyone would want to buy one of those things."

She laughed at me. "I thought you understood Chinese people!" she said.

"They love cars like that. If you're rich in China you want to show it off."

And in Beijing there are plenty of new rich who like to show it off.

I'm not talking about rich compared to other Chinese. I'm talking rich compared to anywhere.

American lifestyle

You can see it the neighbourhood where I live on the outskirts of Beijing.

Two years ago it was surrounded by corn fields.

Now it's surrounded by huge new building sites for luxury housing complexes.

Places with names like Grand Hills, Riviera, or, my personal favourite, Yosemite Park.

China now encourages the art of making money

Here China's new rich can buy a fully packaged American lifestyle, five bedrooms, a real log fire, and of course an extra large garage for the 4X4.

All yours for the bargain sum of $1m, and there are no shortage of takers.

So where's all the money coming from? Well, much of it is far from clean.

In my new area there are no doubt a fair number of corrupt officials, police officers and even the odd gangster.

But an increasing number are from a class that 10 years ago hardly existed in China: private entrepreneurs.

To see them in action you have to leave Beijing behind and head south, 1500 miles south to the little city of Wenzhou on the coast of Zhejiang.

Wenzhou is crowded in between a wall of mountains and the wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean.

Its physical isolation has forced its people to look outwards across the sea.

It's a city of traders and, interestingly, of churches.

Christianity and capitalism have both found fertile souls among the people of Wenzhou.

But as you drive from the airport into the city it's not the churches you notice, it's the factories.

Proud signs

I'd been picked up by the driver of one of those factory owners.

Snug inside the boss' V12 Mercedes Benz we sliced through the traffic at alarming speed, the driver's hand constantly on the horn.

Not everyone in modern China is making bags of money

We sped past factory after factory, their oversized gates proudly displaying names like Golden Dragon Footwear, or Bright China Leather.

One even had a huge billboard showing Pierce Brosnan, better known as 007, purportedly wearing one of their suits.

Here capitalism is raw and unregulated. The air is acrid. The rivers run black.

It's not pretty, but it's thriving.

Finally the large black car slipped through the gates of the East Wind cigarette lighter factory.

On its steps stood a short man with a crew cut.

He was the spitting image of China's late communist party chief Deng Xiaoping, the man who coined the phrase "to get rich is glorious".

Success story

Mr Feng has taken the words of his more famous doppelganger to heart.

Starting with a small loan 15 years ago he now produces 100m cigarette lighters a year.

If you have a cigarette lighter in your pocket or your handbag the chances are it comes from Wenzhou, and there's a fair chance it comes from Mr Feng's factory.

Mr Feng's formula for success is simple.

Learn how to make something, then make it cheaper than anyone else.

The first part was easy, he bought samples of the best lighters from Japan, took them apart and copied them.

But it's cheap that Mr Feng really excels at.

He took a sleek red lighter from his pocket and gave it to me.

"In Japan this costs about $25," he told me. "I can make it for $1!"

China's changing society is most evident in its cities

Mr Feng's secret is his work force. In a large hanger I found 600 of them sitting behind rows of desks assembling lighters.

Most were young women.

"They're better at the fiddly work" Mr Feng told me.

But men or women, they all have one thing in common, they are all migrants from China's countryside.

And they'll all work for virtually nothing. Mr Feng pays his workers about $90 a month.

China today is like 18th century Manchester, only much, much bigger.

There are now thousands of Mr Fengs all over southern China, setting up factories and churning out goods.

And there are 900 million poor farmers in China's countryside, all just waiting to up sticks and move to a factory.

The implications for the rest of the world are troubling.

"Just think of it this way," one Chinese economist told me recently.

"If all the industrial jobs in Europe and America moved to China tomorrow, we'd still have plenty of people left over!"

Ford has discontinued its Lincoln Blackwood model

Honda to hire 2,000 in the US

Honda Motor is about to announce plans to hire 2,000 workers and to double production of engines and mini vans at its Alabama plant, a newspaper said.
Separately, a Honda official said the company has been shipping in steel from Japan for a few weeks "as an emergency measure" because US steelmakers have been unable to supply enough of the metal to meet its needs.

The Alabama expansion plan would lift Honda's output of Odyssey minivans and V6 engines from about 150,000 a year to about 300,000. We do quite a bit of auto loans no credit in Alabama and Georgia/

In 2001, Honda hired 800 workers and increased its Odyssey production to 150,000 a year from its original projection of 120,000.

Honda's expansion plans will further boost Alabama's role as a leading car making centre.

Currently, five major car makers employ 34,000 people in Alabama, including:

Best Driver on the Road Is Looking in My Rearview Mirror

How do you rate yourself as a driver?

No, that's a stupid question. You rate yourself above average. It's a well-known fact that all humans consider themselves to be above-average drivers, including primitive Amazonian mud people who have not yet discovered the wheel.

No amount of physical evidence will convince a bad driver that he or she is a bad driver. You take a motorist who, while attempting to pull out of a parking space, mistakes "forward" for "reverse," then, in an effort to correct this error, mistakes the accelerator for the brake and sends his car lunging across a sidewalk and into a restaurant, attaining a speed of 37 miles per hour by the time it rams the salad bar. Even as the paramedics are tweezing chick peas from the ears of this motorist, he will loudly insist that (a) the restaurant was not there before; and (b) there are PLENTY of people on the road who do not drive as well as he does.

And the scary thing is: He's right! There are LOTS of worse drivers out there! In fact, a whopping 93% of all drivers are below average. And if you believe this is statistically impossible, you have not spent much time watching motorists whopping around on our nation's highways. Certainly you have never driven in my state, Florida, which automatically issues a driver's license to every new arrival, including stranded whales.

But getting back to your driving ability: I can tell from the perceptive way you're reading this article that you truly are above average. So am I, of course. I took Drivers Education at Pleasantville (N.Y.) High School; we did our road training in a 1962 Plymouth Inertia, creeping around Pleasantville at minus two miles per hour, always maintaining a Safe Following Distance.

Anyway, since you and I are such superior drivers, I wanted to share with you an excellent idea that was sent in to me by Florida motorist Damara Hutchins, who is also above average. She notes the annoying behavior of certain motorists, especially the ones who drift along in the left, or "passing," lane, never passing anybody, and also never noticing the line of motorists behind them flashing their lights, honking their horns, firing marine flares, etc.

So anyway, here is Damara Hutchins' idea: powerful bumper- mounted sucker-dart guns. You would shoot these at other motorists when they did something stupid. You could fire several different colors of darts, to indicate the type of infraction. This would be a big help to the police, who could use the darts as evidence:

Officer: Sir, do you know why I pulled you over?

Motorist: No, why?

Officer: I count 17 red sucker darts on your rear bumper, which means you've been blocking the left lane.

Motorist: But I'm going the speed limit!

Officer (sighing): Sir, we only pretend that's the speed limit. In good weather and light traffic, the real speed limit is about 10 miles per hour faster, which is the speed 80% of the other drivers are going. If you don't want to go that fast, you need to get over, OK? Also, I count five yellow darts, indicating you swerved between lanes while using your cell; and one brown dart you got for driving a Pontiac Aztek, a vehicle ugly enough to cause retina damage.

Of course, only good drivers would be allowed to participate in the car-dart program. But assuming we can work out the details, I think this is a terrific idea.

FOOTNOTE: After I wrote this column, I was informed that a similar concept was proposed by the comedian Gallagher. So I want to give him credit and point out he is an above-average driver.

Drunk Drivers Come From Hell.

Mel was stone drunk and loving it when the police cruiser
pulled him over on the empty southern Indiana road. Yet Mel
hadn't touched a drop. Drinking was against his religion,
sure as the worn Bible in the passenger seat.

Officer Brad West (not his real name) wasn't surprised. The
Ford Galaxy had started weaving just after passing the dying
oak tree, same as five other cars had that week alone. And
he wasn't surprised when Mel couldn't walk a straight line,
touch his nose with his finger, and had to stop counting
backwards from a hundred at ninety-three. Nor was he alarmed
when Mel passed the Breathalyzer test with flying colors,
blowing a 0.00. Zilch.

Officer West let poor Mel drive off with just a warning.
There was no way he could ticket the old coot for being under
the influence of spirits—not when he believed that just ONE
spirit was involved. And not the alcohol type.

Officer West knew he had the instincts of a detective, even
though he'd only been on the force for a year. It would take
time before he could try for a promotion, especially since
he was an out-of-towner from Michigan. That was why he'd
investigated the rash of drunk drivers on this section of
road during his off-duty time.

It hadn't taken long for the troubling picture to become
clear, if a person wasn't afraid to see it, which Brad was,
a little. Seems that five years back a drunken wife-beater
had rocketed off the road at 100 m.p.h. or better until a
big 'ol oak brought the scuzzbag's car and his rotten life
to an end. The one-car accident had taken place at 1 a.m.,
the same time as the other drunk driving incidents, like
the one involving Mel. According to Brad's count, there had
been an alarming three dozen of them over the past five years.

That was why, after letting Mel drive away, Officer West
exited his patrol car with the ritual items he'd purchased
after weeks of research. Whether the ceremony he performed
that night beneath the giant oak was a true exorcism, Officer
West couldn't say. He was no psychic expert, and, truth be
told, was uncomfortable with such matters.

But Officer West will swear to this: after that night, no
more innocent drivers were possessed by the evil spirit of
an abusive drunk, causing them to act drunk in turn. And if
that wasn't keeping the peace, he didn't know what was.

Race car driver Andy Belmont went on a rant the
other day using a theme with which he's become all too
familiar. "General Lack of Respect" is his Internet-essay
reaction to the abrupt phone-machine resignation of a
team member.

Belmont started the 2004 racing season facing a General Lack
of Respect, so why should things be different now?

The runner-up to Jimmy Hensley for Winston Cup Rookie of
the Year in 1992, Belmont entered Cup races earlier this
season. NASCAR ordered him to put rookie stripes on his car.

"I said, 'Do I get to run for rookie again?' They said,
'Well, you haven't been here in a while.' 'Like you think
I forgot how to do this?' "

He'd park his modest $150,000 motor home among the million-
dollar trailers in the Cup lot and "kind of feel like the
Clampetts." Then there was the issue with the speed of
his car, or lack thereof. He was labeled a field filler,
a driver whose car is significantly slower than the
front-runners, but helps to field a full race complement
of 43 cars.

But the millionaires over in the Nextel Cup garage last
weekend at Pocono could have gotten a seminar on making
more with less if they'd bothered to wander over to the
ARCA garage to see how the other half of racing lives.

While the major-league stock car racing industry continues
to shrink, Belmont is surviving nicely in the mid-level
ARCA circuit. He drove the No. 2 Pontiac to an 11th-
place finish in the Giant 200. Three other cars he owns
came in 10th, 23rd and 24th.

Belmont also has a rent-a-racer program which will train
anyone and put them in a car for $30,000 a race. And a
weekly radio show. And an Internet column, known for
its candor, featured on 15 sites.

So go ahead and call him field filler, as he heard when
he ran Cup races at Atlanta [39th-place finish] and
Darlington [37th]. "Call me what you want," Belmont
said, "but that car's brought in 143 grand so far."

Besides, no one can make fun of Belmont like himself.
"I've got eight motors," he said, "and there ain't a one
that them guys next door would use for a boat anchor."

Is he complaining? Not for a second.

"I'm just trying to make a living, chasing a dream,"
Belmont said. "As long as we can pay the bills, the
[five] kids' heads don't get wet at night and there's
groceries in the fridge, what do I care?"

Some weekends the fun of racing is also good business.

"I'm probably the worst guy in the world to be a car
owner because I'm a racer," Belmont said. "Every time
I get a little bit ahead, I buy another set of shocks
or a new motor. In 1998 we had one car in a two-bay
shop and a toolbox. Now we've got a dozen cars, nine
employees, two tractor trailers and racing's paid for
it all. So we're doing OK."

Part of the deal that got Belmont a new trailer requires
him to walk through the infield passing out fliers
about the trailer company, along with another sponsor's
pills offering "Freedom From Hangovers."

"At Darlington, my guys and I would go out and hand out
stuff and, hell, we got fed, we got beer, and that's
part of the fun."

It just gets to him when relative racing newcomers show
his team a lack of respect.

At Rockingham, he said, "the sneers from over in the
48 pit [Jimmie Johnson's] were a little disconcerting.'

One Cup veteran said that's the changing face of the sport.

"That's the ugly face of this sport," Kyle Petty said.
"Two years ago, a guy came by to talk to me in the garage
area at Darlington. We talked for a while. When he walked
off, two guys working on the car next to us asked,
'Who's that old man?' "

"I said, 'Stop. You're working on a car here at Darlington
and you don't know who that guy is?' I said, 'His name's
David Pearson, he's won more races here than anybody
that ever set their rear end in a race car. As far as
I'm concerned you shouldn't be allowed in the garage
area if you don't know who this guy is.' And that's the
problem with this sport right now from my perspective.
A lot of people are coming in the sport but they don't
know any of the history. It's like playing professional
baseball and never knowing about Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth."

Although Petty doesn't know Belmont very well, he knows
enough to believe the man deserves respect.

"Of all the people over there, he is probably the best
marketer and the best sales person," Petty said. "He's
the first guy that brought AOL to the table. He brought
people to the game over there that people over here have
stolen from him. Just because you're in ARCA doesn't
mean you're second class, that's just where you want to be.

"They talk about field fillers and the haves and have-nots.
Well, a lot of times at the end of the year, the have-nots
have a bigger profit margin than the haves because the
haves spent everything they could to try to win races.
These guys aren't looking at winning races. These guys
are looking at making money. When you start looking at
making things happen that way, it's a different perspective."

Belmont's perspective is on display weekly at his Web
site (fieldfillers.com) and on many other racing sites.
Even NASCAR reads this bard of the backstretch.

He wrote, jokingly he said, about the struggle to make it
home outside Philadelphia from Darlington: "Can't sleep
tonight, got to get home. Missed getting the kids off to
school, went straight to work. Got to order more stackers
for these long trips through the night. Mail order can
still net you a real jolt with ephedra."

That paragraph caught NASCAR's attention. The column
disappeared for awhile. Asked if NASCAR had shut him down,
Belmont said, "No comment." Of course, he was simply
catching his breath.

"I was asked if I wanted to be a racer or a writer,"
he said. "I kind of took the hint there. I was told not
to talk to [reporters], point blank. I was screamed at.
Some pretty high-up people used four-letter words on me.
I thought that was amusing. We're not allowed to stay
that stuff on the radio, but behind closed doors they
scream at you and talk to you like you're trash."

A NASCAR official confirmed there was a discussion
with Belmont.

"We don't divulge particulars about private conversations,"
Herb Branham said. As for the four-letter words, Branham
said, "Strong language might be used, especially if an
individual might not be understanding a point we're
trying to make."

But Belmont has a point of his own: "In the end, all
those guys that live in the white house on the hill
with the white picket fence, they ain't got a clue
what it takes for guys to stay racing."

Belmont has been working on the answer since the second
grade, when the nuns at the Assumption School in
Feasterville, Pa., would confiscate his drawings of Richard
Petty's race car from his composition book.

"In the '60s, racing was still wine, women and leather
coats," Belmont said. "We were heathens because we
liked racing."

His dad took the family to Daytona in a converted mail
truck in 1964 and they've been returning ever since.

Belmont had 10 Cup starts from 1989-92, before the money
and opportunities ran out. In ARCA, he's finished in
the top 10 in points five of the past six years.

"If the Lord takes me today, I've had a great life,"
Belmont, 46, said. "I've raced against Richard Petty
in my first race. [Dale] Earnhardt run across my fender
at Dover because I was in his way. That was the signal;
he didn't talk to you, he just kind of told you how it
was. There ain't a whole lot of guys can say that."

In an odd turnabout Sunday, Kasey Kahne, who has been in
a couple of wrecks instigated by Tony Stewart, came to
Stewart's defense.

While running three-wide, Kahne thought Kurt Busch had
wrecked Stewart when his No. 20 Chevrolet lost control,
hit the wall and was eliminated after 107 laps. Kahne
said he got into Busch's No. 97 Ford, then apologized
for it.

"Me and Kurt hit a few laps before," Kahne said. "He ran
into my door pretty good, and then that happened with
Tony. I thought he ran into Tony and crashed him, and
I thought our race was over. I definitely need to apologize
to Kurt. There was no need for that, and I was just
frustrated at the time. I need to control myself."

Sunday's second-place finish has Mark Martin pumped for
this week's race at Indianapolis, and he's put the challenge
to his team.

"We need to go win the Brickyard," Martin said.

"You all know I don't say stuff like that very often. If
we do that, then you all come and ask me if we can get
to the top 10. But let's don't dwell on that right now
because really all that matters to me and my team is
winning the Brickyard. That would make up for all the
heartbreak that we've experienced this year."

Martin has had a season of highs (ending a 72-race non-
winning streak with a victory at Dover) and numerous lows
(dropping out of contention at Charlotte with two bad
ignition boxes and leading at Chicagoland with two laps
to go when he broke a piston).

"It's very difficult to single out one race and go get
it," Martin said, "but, you know, my guys after a heartbreak
at Charlotte said, 'We've just got to go win Dover.' I
thought under my breath, 'Yeah, right.' And we did.

"So after Chicago, that's what I told those guys. I said,
'Don't worry about it. No sweat. Let's just go win the
Brickyard, and that will make our season and let the
points be what they may.' This makes it all worthwhile,
and although our heart was broke at Chicago, we're over
it now, and we're geared up to go get 'em next week."

LONG POND, Pa. — That dull sound heard at Pocono Raceway on
Sunday was the continuing freefall of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s
No. 8 Chevrolet team.

In the two weeks since Earnhardt was burned in an accident
in California while practicing for a sports car race, he's
gone from second, 105 points behind Jimmie Johnson in the
Nextel Cup race, to third, 267 points back.

For the second consecutive race, Earnhardt had to vacate
the car for a relief driver.

The burns that Earnhardt suffered at Sonoma weren't as much
a problem as the inactivity required to heal. The No. 8
was ill-handling, anyway, and Earnhardt felt unsafe because
his legs were falling asleep, and he could not feel his
brake pedal.

John Andretti took over after Earnhardt rolled into the
pits after completing 52 laps, running 33rd, a lap down.
Andretti brought the car home 25th.

Last week at New Hampshire, Earnhardt started the race but
turned the car over to Martin Truex Jr. after 61 laps.
The team finished 31st.

"I felt fine. The bumps hurt a little bit, but my foot
was going to sleep," Earnhardt said. "I haven't been using
it a lot. I haven't been standing on it much, and it just
goes to sleep and cramps up real easy."

A poor run made it easier to get out of the car.

"I could have run the rest of the way, but the car was so
bad, I really didn't need to be in there wasting my time,"
he said. "I hated more giving [a bad car] to the guys than
to get out of it."

Atlanta Motor Speedway president Ed Clark sympathizes
with Nextel driver Jimmie Johnson, who was fined $10,000
by NASCAR for not following the proper victory lane protocol
after winning at Pocono Raceway on Sunday.

Johnson placed a placard from his primary sponsor, Lowe's,
in front of a Powerade bottle put on the roof of his car
because Powerade — a Coca-Cola product — is a sponsor of
NASCAR. The problem for Johnson is one of his sponsors,
Pepsi, is a competitor of all things Coke.

"Anybody in the business faces the same kind of conflict
at some point if they have any sponsors at all," Clark said.

"[Johnson] has an exclusive agreement with one company,
and NASCAR has one with a competitor. It puts them on a
collision course."

Two weeks ago at New Hampshire, after some drivers had been
knocking Powerade and other sponsors' products off their
cars in victory lane, NASCAR president Mike Helton told
drivers to be considerate of all sponsors in the sport,
even those who sell products that compete with their backers.

That leaves Johnson and others in a quandary, Clark said.

Clark faces similar problems at his track trying to produce
program covers and marketing plans that don't cause conflicts.

For instance, he's limited in what he can do with a hometown
company like Home Depot because his parent company, Speedway
Motorsports, has a long-standing agreement with Lowe's.

But Clark said sponsor conflicts aren't a new issue, and
in the past it's been the sponsors themselves who eventually
came up with a solution.

In the mid-1980s, when Bill Elliott was winning most of the
speedway races in a Coors-backed car, Miller was sponsoring
races and didn't want a competitor's product in victory lane.

He said Elliott's team considered not going to victory
lane and holding their own post-race celebration elsewhere,
but the beer companies finally reached an accord that took
the pressure off the drivers.

"Solutions can be reached," Clark said. "But you have to do
it before the driver gets to victory lane."

Sport utility vehicles roared into stump speeches this month, flattening all common sense. At a speech last week introducing President George W. Bush, Virginia's Gov. George Allen juiced the crowd by asking how many people arrived in SUVs and pickups. After a show of hands, Allen was quoted by the Washington Post as saying, "Heck, John Kerry doesn't even like what you drive."

Allen was wrong. Only three days before in Missouri, out of the earshot of the environmental think tanks in Washington and California, Kerry said: "I want Americans to drive. You want to drive a great big SUV? Terrific. That's America."

No kidding that's America, as sure as his environmentalist wife Teresa Heinz Kerry has three SUVs. It's OK if Kerry says he understands how SUVs came to be so popular, but he just looks plain ridiculous telling SUV owners their lifestyle is "terrific." Kerry threw in, of course, that he would push for better gas mileage on SUVs and how he and running mate John Edwards are going to buy a hybrid gas-electric SUV.

The reflexive rush to win the SUV vote is no laughing matter on several fronts. Heinz Kerry, like many Americans, says SUVs represent "safety first." Yet studies show they do not. Figures released this week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show the fatality gap in rollover-prone SUVs to be widening over regular cars and minivans.

The agency also released data last week indicating that the chances of a rollover were more than four times higher for a Ford Explorer Sport Trac than a four-door Mazda RX-8 sedan. The worst-rated car for rollovers, the Subaru Outback wagon, is still only about half as risky as the Chevrolet Tahoe, the Ford Explorer, the Mercury Mountaineer and the GMC Yukon.

Besides the mirage of safety, the SUV, with its horrific gas mileage and proven negative effects on the air we breathe, remains a potent symbol of how Americans refuse to rethink their place in the world, let alone sacrifice, in the wake of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the retaliatory war in Afghanistan and the unprovoked invasion of Iraq.

We are already consuming a quarter of the world's oil with only about 6 percent of the world's population. Much of the world suspects that our acute interest in Iraq has less to do with the liberation of its people than the flow of oil to our local gas pumps. We provide no case to the contrary; SUV's make up 27 percent of America's light-duty vehicles. Every other car sold in the United States is an SUV, a fact blunted neither by $2-a-gallon gas nor an uncertain economy. Despite the deaths of nearly 3,000 Americans here and nearly 950 US soldiers in Iraq, Americans are literally driving themselves into denial.

In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, many cars, many of them SUVs, brandished American flags. One of Bush's favorite lines of late, in a dig at what he says is Kerry's indecisiveness on Iraq, is, "There is nothing complicated about supporting our troops in combat."

The Democrats, on the defensive about defense at their recent convention, also tried to sound as uncomplicated as possible on supporting troops in combat. The need to appear uncomplicated has prevented politicians from asking a more complicated question: whether the best way to support our troops means changes at home so we do not have to send them abroad in the first place to protect "our" oil.

That question, of course, is seen as too offensive, even when the current issue of Fortune magazine publishes a 6,300-word article on how the nation needs to stop its "two-decade oil pig-out, gorging like oversized vacationers at a Vegas buffet." We have pigged out to the point imported oil has gone from 30 percent of our supplies to 60 percent in the last three decades.

One of Fortune's four major prescriptions is -- surprise! -- improved fuel economy. "The real market test will occur in coming months as the frugal efficiency of hybrid technology is married to the profligate embodiment of conspicuous consumption: the SUV," Forbes wrote. Even that is an arrogant American solution. While Europeans long ago simply went to smaller cars, here we are, performing the equivalent of open-heart surgery on an elephant, offering it the engine of a hummingbird. It might work, but it would work better if Americans were simply not so vain.

So Americans want to drive a great big SUV? There's no news there. The news will be if Kerry finds a way to say that this is not a terrific way to be an American.

BRAINTREE -- They stand on the front hoods or the rear trunks of speeding cars, some gripping thin metal edges near windshields or tire wells, others balancing with their legs as though skateboarding or ocean surfing, their fate in the hands of the driver and the road.

They are teenagers who get their thrills from the sometimes deadly stunt called car surfing, young people who think that skateboarding is passe and that video games are one-dimensionally dull.

On a recent Friday morning in Winthrop, an unidentified, barefoot teenager knelt on a rear bumper while holding on to the spoiler of a black Mustang as it zoomed down a narrow, two-way street at speeds approaching 50 miles per hour, a towel cushioning his knees.

"Why not do crazy stuff, at least while we're young?" said Tim Cella-Mowatt, 19, who surfed on the trunk of his friend's Lexus last summer. "Once you get old, just walking up the stairs hurts."

The earliest reported death attributed to car surfing occurred in Barnstable in 1996, when Patrick Swift, 18, died after falling from the roof of a 16-year-old's car. No laws specifically ban car surfing in Massachusetts, and despite the risks and the frustrations of local police, some teenagers surf on.

Car surfers sometimes ride a skateboard or roller blades after latching onto the back of a vehicle. Sometimes, two surfers compete to see who can stay on the longest or ride at the fastest speed. Sometimes, they surf, arms outstretched, on the roof of the car.

"If I asked somebody to run headlong into a cement wall, they'd refuse," said State Police Lieutenant Steve McCarthy, commander of the statewide traffic program. "Yet they put themselves at even greater risk by doing that from a moving car."

Cella-Mowatt remembers the sleepy evening in Easton when he hopped onto the trunk of his friend's Lexus. He remembers lying on the hood while his friend drove -- maybe 15 feet, at about 15 miles per hour. The peril was obvious, even at the slow speed. But defying danger was what made it fun, he said.

"When I was on the car I was thinking, 'Why am I doing this?' " he said. "But at the time it was worth a few laughs. It's like smoking cigarettes. Maybe I'll be the one not to get cancer."

Before he died in 1996, Swift, too, was certain nothing would happen, according to his friend, Jay Perry.

"I told him it was stupid. . . . I told him, it's not fun, something's going to happen sometime," Perry told an interviewer shortly after Swift died. "He said, 'No, nothing happens to Swifty. I'm invincible.' "

According to a 1999 article in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, researchers found 29 injuries or deaths caused by car surfing reported in newspapers nationwide between 1989 and 1999. The cases involved 20 males and nine females ages 13 to 29. At least 15 of them died.

Four years ago, a 20-year-old driver was charged with negligent homicide in Tucson after a teenager died car surfing. A jury later acquitted the defendant, according to press reports.

Last week, an 18-year-old Wisconsin man suffered severe head injuries when he fell off the rear bumper of a Jeep Cherokee while car surfing.

Last November, the Parliament of New South Wales in Australia opened a formal inquiry into car surfing. Closer to home, Worcester State College specifically bans it on campus.

Police say that when young people car surf, they are mimicking scenes from such popular movies as "The Matrix," the stunt television show "Jackass," or the video game Grand Theft Auto.

"It's like any kind of high-risk thrill," McCarthy said. "It's exciting, and again some of them seem to be aping or imitating what they see in movies. They're trying to either show their bravery or show off to their friends or find another way to get the adrenaline flowing. But it's not a particularly bright way to do it."

In fast-food restaurants and malls around the region, teenagers interviewed all said they knew of the practice, though few admitted doing it.

"The kids doing it are very different," said Joe Ghio, 15, of Burlington, as he sat with his brother, Kyle, at a Burlington Wendy's. "They're in their own little world and end up doing really stupid things and getting in trouble."

Tara Colbert, 18, and Erin Popa, 17, said they often see their peers in high school latch onto the outside of moving cars in the winter, when icy parking lots and streets make it easy to go for a slide.

The girls, who were visiting Boston from their homes near Akron, Ohio, said they would never do it. So who are the car surfers of Akron?

"Boys!" Colbert and Popa said in unison.

"They're just looking for attention by being loud and obnoxious," agreed Kevin Finn, a 17-year-old senior at Savio Preparatory High School in East Boston. "Sad thing is, one person is going to have to die or get hurt for kids to see that it's dangerous."

While admitting the danger of car surfing, Finn said he would be more likely to laugh if a classmate were to latch onto his Ford Explorer.

"Us kids are stupid," he said, smiling sheepishly. "I'm not going to tell someone not to do it. I'd beep my horn and keep going."

Record oil and gasoline prices this year have not driven Canadian motorists to fuel-efficient vehicles, statistics show.

The price of a barrel of crude hit $47.27 (U.S.) yesterday and average local gasoline prices topped 81 cents (Canadian) a litre, but statistics in Canada and the United States show there's no rush away from fuel guzzlers — yet.

"There is little evidence in the segment data that gas prices have altered consumer buying habits," said industry watcher Dennis DesRosiers.

For example, sales of large pickup trucks, which are among the biggest gas guzzlers, were up 9.2 per cent in Canada during the first half of 2004 from the same period last year. Part of the increase is due to the introduction of a new generation of Ford's F-Series model.

Sales of compact cars, which are far more fuel efficient, slipped 5.3 per cent in the same period. Subcompact sales shot up 24 per cent, but DesRosiers attributes a good chunk of the gain to the entry of the popular General Motors' Aveo model.

In the U.S., where consumers generally tend to buy bigger autos than in Canada, sales of sport-utility vehicles and full-size pickups have climbed 7 per cent this year despite huge increases in gasoline prices.

DesRosiers, president of DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, said motorists have seen high prices in the past and won't change their buying habits until they see strong evidence that the increases will stick for a long time.

He said many motorists are also just staying out of the market waiting to see the direction of fuel prices before making a decision. That is one reason auto sales have declined almost 5 per cent in Canada this year, DesRosiers said.

Since the beginning of the year, unleaded gasoline prices in Toronto have moved from 67 cents a litre to 86.6 cents in late May to 71 cents in late June and back to 81 cents this week.

"The consumer is essentially saying, `Rather than compromise on what I will buy, I will wait until the dust settles on gas prices and then make up my mind,'" DesRosiers said in a note to clients.

However, DesRosiers added, gasoline prices are still important in buying. Motorists may stay in a segment because they want or need a type of vehicle, but look for a more fuel-efficient option in that category.

George Pipas, manager of analysis of U.S. auto sales for Ford Motor Co., said his research also shows no dramatic shift in preferences away from sport-utility vehicles and pickups south of the border since gas prices began rising in March.

However, he said, the price jumps "have throttled back" some growth in SUVs.

Pipas said other factors are also affecting segment shifts, such as the changing priorities of the aging baby-boom generation, many of whom are opting for cross-over vehicles — which combine the features of a sport utility and a car — because they're smaller but easier to enter and exit.

"However, we believe higher gas prices are accelerating that trend," he noted.

Pipas said Ford anticipated the rise in oil prices and the company is gradually coming out with more fuel-efficient models.

"You can't ignore it," he said about the lingering high prices. "It's staying on our radar screen, not like before."

Ford will start selling the Escape, the world's first hybrid gasoline-electric sport ute, and the Freestyle crossover vehicle this fall.

U.S. light-crude-oil prices have jumped 27 per cent in six weeks.

Yesterday's price is the highest settlement price on record at the New York Mercantile Exchange, but after adjustment for inflation, is $10 (U.S.) less a barrel than before the first Gulf War in 1991.

Hair May Link Student to SUV Vandalism

Los Angeles - A graduate student indicted in a series of firebombings and vandalizing of sport utility vehicles was linked to one targeted SUV dealership by DNA taken from a hair found at the scene, prosecutors say.

Billy Cottrell, 24, a physics student at the California Institute of Technology, was indicted in March in connection with the damage or destruction of about 125 vehicles in the San Gabriel Valley last August.

According to authorities, he used an alias to tell the Los Angeles Times he was involved in the SUV attacks and affiliated with the radical Earth Liberation Front.

Prosecutors have disclosed that forensics experts matched DNA from hair and saliva samples taken from Cottrell to a hair found on a headband at the dealership, the Pasadena Star News reported Friday.

Cottrell's lawyers countered that the discovery does not prove Cottrell was responsible for the vandalism.

"Mere presence (at the scene) is not sufficient to convict someone of something they've been charged with," defense attorney Michael Mayock said.

Cottrell faces one count of conspiracy to commit arson, seven counts of arson and one count of using a destructive device — a Molotov cocktail.

He is being held without bail pending a trial set for Oct. 26. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 35 years to life in prison.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - It started early one morning in 1997 after a night of partying, when Darrell Butler was a Rutgers University sophomore with little money and a craving for chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks and french fries.

Now the "Fat Darrell" has been crowned the best sandwich in the country by Maxim magazine. Maxim's September issue, which lists the top 10 sandwiches, hits news stands Tuesday.

Fat Darrell — named for its caloric content, not Butler, a 160-pound physical trainer and aspiring actor — was conceived as a way to save money by combining the creator's various cravings on one bun.

"Separately, they would have cost me, like, $12.75, and I was on a college budget," Butler, 26, of Eatontown, told The Associated Press. He combined all three foods into a single order.

"So, I'm standing there eating it, and all of a sudden the guy standing behind me says, 'That thing that guy's eating looks pretty good, can you make me one of those?' And, it was like a movie scene, the next 10 people order the same thing. So, I'm like, 'Whoa!' like I think I might be onto something. And the guy is like, 'Hey, man, this is cool.'"

That guy who assembled the sandwich was Abdul Eid, working in an R.U. Hungry food truck, parked in a campus lot in New Brunswick, catering to beer-soaked undergraduates with the late-night munchies.

Eid now runs R.U. Hungry Grill & Pizza, a store he was able to open in part due to the success of the $4.75 Fat Darrell, the flagship of R.U.'s "Fat" line.

"I have the 'Fat Mojo,' which is exactly the same thing as the 'Fat Darrell,' but with honey mustard instead of marinara sauce," said Eid, 34, a native of Beirut, Lebanon.

Maxim's runner-up was "The Nuke," an artery blocker at the Staggering Ox in Helena, Montana, that combines ham, roast beef, turkey and three cheeses.

Laura Gilbert, a Maxim senior editor, said the Fat Darrell's inception was a factor in its top ranking.

"It just has that element of drunken ingenuity that our readers like," she said. The magazine caters to young professional men.

Wal-Mart Is Happy With Overnight RV's, But Others Aren't

With more than 3,400 locations in the United States -- and two in San Luis Obispo County -- Wal-Mart parking lots are easy to find by travelers seeking a place to park their RVs, trailers and cars overnight.

But cities from San Jose to Bradenton, Fla., are increasingly banning that practice because of neighbor complaints or property damage.

For years, Wal-Mart has allowed travelers to park overnight or even for a couple days outside stores for free.

"We consider it a courtesy to our customers," spokeswoman Sharon Weber told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Paso Robles and Arroyo Grande have long banned motorists from camping in places other than designated campgrounds. Police officials and store managers say they have had few problems with people breaking the rules.

"Paso Robles does not have a problem with overnight campers," said Sgt. Bob Adams, noting that the ordinance is mainly to keep people off public streets and parks, not private property. "We do have sporadic problems with people using it (Wal-Mart) as a campground (and) not passing through." The purpose of the ordinance in Arroyo Grande, which was passed before Wal-Mart was built, is to make sure people don't stop and camp all over the city, said Arroyo Grande Police Chief Rick TerBorch.

"We want to maintain a certain sense of quality of life within the city," he said.

Most motorists move on if contacted by police, he said. TerBorch could not recall the last time a citation was issued to a camper who violated the ordinance.

"Compliance is our goal,'' he said. "We're not trying to make people's lives miserable.'' Store managers at the county's Wal-Mart stores, which post "no parking'' signs, could not estimate how many people use the lots for camping. Most people come in late at night and leave first thing in the morning, said John Wallace, co-manager of the Paso Robles store.

"It's just a matter of people coming in who don't know the ordinances," Wallace said. "But for the most part, it hasn't been any big issue." More than 340 Wal-Mart stores across the nation don't allow overnight parking, according to the Web site www.freecamp grounds.com. That list is becoming longer each day, with bans coming because of new city ordinances, complaints from nearby businesses or because of unruly campers.

Some people continue to park in the lots despite the ordinances.

Gene, a Texas resident who declined to give his last name, said he's a regular at Wal-Mart parking lots. He pulled into the Wal-Mart lot in Paso Robles on a recent Thursday evening to escape the cold weather in Morro Bay, where he had been camping.

He owns an atlas sold exclusively by Wal-Mart that lists store locations in every state.

"Wherever you are, you can go coast to coast, and stay in a Wal-Mart," he said.

Your relationship with your car may affect how you dispose of it.

There are many donation options, and below are just a few of them, including ones you may not have heard of before.

Car body to science

For example, if you gaze at the family station wagon with nostalgia, recollecting how she served you well, you may want to hand the keys and title over to the Fox Valley Career Center's Auto Shop.

It's kind of like donating your car to science. Here students from the high schools of the St. Charles, Batavia, Geneva and Kaneland school districts will dissect the car to learn basic services and care like fixing a flat, changing oil and tire rotation. More advanced students will study how the car's computer systems work.

Donations are important "because that gives us real hands-on equipment to work with," said Larry Imel, director of the career center.

"We welcome people to contact us. If it's something we don't think we can use we might not take it. But its kind of a win-win situation for the community and the career center. They have somewhere they can place the car and we're able to use it as a learning tool."

The Fox Valley Career Center Auto Shop is attached to Kaneland High School at Meredith and Keslinger. The donor is responsible for transportation of the vehicle. A letter of acknowledgment and thanks is sent to the donor and can be used in itemized tax deductions.

To start the donation process call Diane Larson of the Fox Valley Career Center at (630) 365-5113. But please wait until the school year starts in late August.

Charity help

Another way to make sure your car avoids the chopping block is to contact the Salvation Army.

Your car will find a new home on the auction block while you save some money on taxes. The Salvation Army will even incur the expense of towing the car. The organization's tow-truck drivers will trek from Wisconsin to Indiana to pick up a car that will fetch a decent sum at auction.

They hope for models later than 1990, but they have accepted earlier models, and classics. The Salvation Army's tow truck driver will hand the donor a receipt, whereupon ownership of the vehicle is transferred. The donor uses this receipt, along with a letter of proof and thanks, for tax deductions. The number for the Salvation Army's car donation program is (888) 288-6053.

Car lovers and philanthropists alike can donate through Cars4Charities. This organization donates a minimum of 75 percent of the sales price of each vehicle to a charity of the donor's choice.

There are more than 200 charities to choose from, one of which is the Three Fires Council of the Boy Scouts of America, located on Second Street in St. Charles. The entire donation process can be done online at www.cars4charities.org and free nationwide vehicle pick-up if offered.

An online information form about the vehicle can be completed and submitted, and within 48 hours a return e-mail will tell if your car is eligible. Either title or transferable registration is necessary to initiate the donation process. Donors are eligible for tax deductions on their itemized federal tax return for the fair market value of the vehicle donated.

Cut up for training

But if you'd never wish the stress your car has caused on your worst enemy, there are other options.

If the mere sight of your car makes you seethe as you think of the money it drained from your pocket, or how it laughed at you as you sat on the shoulder, already late for work, then the chopping block may be fitting.

In this case, the fire departments of Batavia, Elburn, Geneva, St. Charles and Sugar Grove accept used car donations. The title is transferred and the donor receives a letter of thanks and proof used for tax deductions.

Then the car is left to the mercy of tools such as the Jaws of Life, which will cut through the car's steel frame with ease. Or the air chisel, a tool used to cut metal without generating sparks, which will shred the car's metal skin.

These tools prove invaluable as the firemen destroy the car to practice extrication, or the removal of an accident victim from the twisted steel of a car wreck.

"We test new tools on the cars and run real-time scenarios using dummies. When we're finished the car is barely recognizable. We smash the windows, remove the doors and tear off the roof," said Assistant Chief Kevin Christensen of the St. Charles Fire Department.

The car is a burden no more, as it will soon rest in peace in the junkyard.

Earnhardt incident prompts debate over drivers' choices

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s crash Sunday at Infineon Raceway in
Sonoma, Calif., has renewed debate over the risks NASCAR
drivers take when they race in other series.

Earnhardt suffered second-degree burns on approximately
6 percent of his body -- mostly his legs and chin -- when
he backed a Chevrolet Corvette into the wall while
practicing for a American LeMans Series race. His injuries
are not expected to prevent his full participation in the
Nextel Cup race this weekend at Loudon, N.H., but they do
raise questions about whether drivers such as Earnhardt,
who is second in Cup points and has three wins already
this season, should risk injury by running in non-
NASCAR races.

Atlanta Motor Speedway president Ed Clark said sponsors,
some of whom spend more than $15 million a year to fund
NASCAR race teams, may try to crack down on their drivers'
extra-curricular racing.

"I'm sure as time goes by more sponsors will take a
harder look at outside stuff like that," Clark said. "If
I had a ton of money invested in a top-10 team, I'd
feel funny about them going out and doing something
else, but to the drivers that kind of racing is their
golf game, their way to relax."

But, Clark said, it's doubtful any team owner or sponsor
can really control a driver who is as big in the sport
as Earnhardt.

"Dale Jr. is going to do what Dale Jr. wants to do," he
said. "But he may think about it a little more now."

Len Wood, co-owner of the No. 21 Ford driven by Ricky
Rudd, said it's difficult for a team owner or sponsor
to say what risks their driver can take off the track.

"We had a tire changer one time that broke his leg skiing
and was out four months," he said. "Where do you draw
the line? Does that mean you can't ride motorcycles?"

Wood agreed with Clark that it's difficult to tell top
stars not to race.

"If you tell Dale Jr. he can't do this and can't do
that, it's the beginning of the end," he said. "He'll
go somewhere he can do what he wants."

Home Depot spokesman Eric Oberman said company officials
know Tony Stewart could be hurt in a crash, but they
allow him to run open-wheeled sprint cars and USAC Midgets.

"We're always concerned about our driver's well-being,
whether it be on the Nextel Cup circuit or in any other
racing discipline," Oberman said. "We defer to Joe
Gibbs Racing to monitor the scope of Tony's extra-
curricular racing activities."

Roush Racing president Geoff Smith said provisions
for extra-curricular racing are a part of every contract
he's signed with drivers for at least 10 years.

"We get permission for our drivers to be in IROC, Busch
and [Craftsman] Truck series races because we think that
participation can enhance their performance in the main
event," Smith said. "The issue of injury always comes
up, and sponsors have protection should that occur."

Smith said if a driver is injured and can't drive his
Cup car, the sponsor isn't obligated to continue paying.

Defending Cup champion Matt Kenseth, who drives for
Roush, has run several Late Model races recently, but
only with Roush's approval.

"We reviewed the safety of the team and the preparation
of the cars," Smith said.

"But [Earnhardt's crash] highlights an issue that our
camp, our sponsors know about before they sign up,"
Smith said, adding that drivers also are cautious
because they know their paycheck will stop if they
get hurt.

Green winds up fastest as Indy testing sessions end

INDIANAPOLIS -- The testing numbers don't lie: The Brickyard
400 is one of the most coveted victories for any NASCAR
Nextel Cup Series drivers.

A total of 38 drivers combined to turn 6,284 laps around the
2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway during six days of
testing this month for the 11th annual Brickyard 400 on Aug.
8. That's 15,710 miles of testing, nearly the same distance
from Indianapolis to Auckland, New Zealand -- and back.

In fact, each driver averaged 165 laps -- five laps more
than the actual race distance -- during testing July 6-7,
July 12-13 and July 19-20 at Indianapolis.

"This is a race where everybody brings their best stuff,
puts their best effort forward," three-time Brickyard 400
winner Jeff Gordon said. "If you don't, you're certainly
not going to have a chance of winning, and even if you do,
it doesn't secure anything."

Said 1989 NASCAR champion Rusty Wallace: "It's definitely
one of the top three tracks of the year to win. It's a
tough one because everybody's testing; the entire NASCAR
circuit comes here. Everybody raises the bar; it's a real
pressure-packed weekend."

Experience plays a big role in success in the Brickyard
400, as inaugural race winner Jeff Gordon and last year's
winner, Kevin Harvick, were the only Brickyard champions
who didn't have at least four years of top-level NASCAR
experience when they won.

But that trend could be changing, if last year's race
and this month's testing speed charts are any indication.

Harvick won the 2003 Brickyard 400 in just his third NASCAR
Nextel Cup Series season, the least-experienced winner
since Gordon won in 1994 in just his second full season.

The top three drivers in testing this month -- Jeff Green,
Brian Vickers and Jason Leffler -- have combined to complete
just three full NASCAR Nextel Cup seasons. Green has raced
two full seasons, Leffler one, while Vickers is a rookie
after capturing the NASCAR Busch Series title in 2003.

Green was fastest overall at 181.641 mph in the No. 43
Dodge on July 7, while Vickers was second at 181.554 in
the No. 25 Chevrolet on July 13. Leffler rounded out the
top three at 180.787 in the No. 60 Chevrolet on July 13.

Veteran Sterling Marlin was the fastest of the final week
of testing, fourth overall at 180.305 in the No. 40 Dodge
on July 20. Fellow veteran Mark Martin recorded the fastest
speed by a Ford driver, 179.690, in the No. 6 Ford on July
13. That was good for seventh overall.

Only two past winners cracked the top 10 in testing.
Gordon was ninth overall at 179.456 in the No. 24 Chevrolet
on July 13, while 2002 winner Bill Elliott was 10th at
179.085 in the No. 91 Dodge on July 20.

Sales of sport-utility vehicles continue to dramatically outperform the auto industry in general, but there were significant signs last month that interest could be waning.
High gasoline prices and the launch of interesting cars are behind the apparent shift, according to the Power Information Network, which collects and analyzes detailed sales data.

"The SUV segment is under exceptional pressure," says Tom Libby, senior analyst at PIN. One month is not a trend, so, "We have to wait to see if it's ongoing or an aberration. But the end of the SUV? That's ridiculous; it's not," he says.

SUV sales were up 7.5% last month, vs. a year ago. Through July, they are 7% ahead of the previous year.

By contrast, sales of all new cars and trucks were up 2.9% last month and are up 2.4% through July, according to Autodata.

SUV sales might continue to show big gains, but at increasing expense to automakers.

Signs of SUV weakness:

• Cars are siphoning buyers. Libby says that SUVs are 29% of trade-ins for the 2005 Dodge Magnum, a sporty station wagon. That's twice the 14% typical for Magnum's segment. And Magnum is selling not only without discounts from Dodge, but also none from dealers, bringing full window-sticker price or higher, say online car-shopping sites.

"There are other cars out there with lots of buzz," likely to swipe SUV buyers, Libby notes.

• Incentives grew dramatically, suggesting deals had to be sweeter to lure buyers. Automakers bumped SUV incentives to an average $3,440 in July, up 11.5% from June and up 4.7% from a year earlier, PIN reports. Average for all cars and trucks: $2,867, down 3.9% from last year.

"We saw really good strides in SUVs in July, and it was incentive-based," says Jerry Reynolds, owner of Prestige Ford in Garland, Texas. "Incentives already have gone up in August, so it could be strong again."

• SUVs now sit at dealers longer than other vehicles do, despite bigger rebates. PIN says it takes an average 73 days to sell an SUV, up from 60 a year ago and longer than the 71-day average for all cars and trucks.

• Transaction prices — the actual price paid after discounts are figured — are dropping for SUVs but rising for new vehicles generally. Reynolds surmises that first-time SUV buyers are choosing smaller, less-expensive models. "Sales of Expedition and Excursion have slowed, but (smaller) Escape and Explorer are taking up the slack," he says.

Larger SUVs are more profitable for car companies.

Faced with $2 Gas, Drivers Strategize

Glenn Margritz is stringing errands together, Connie Miller is thinking of swapping her big SUV for an economy car and Katie Groves is riding her bike to work. Those are just some of the ways drivers are trying to cope with gas prices that are hitting record levels in Nebraska and Iowa and are nearing -- or are already exceeding -- $2 per gallon.

Saving money is part of the motivation. But there's also something marketing experts call the "gaming instinct" -- the desire among consumers to win the game against retailers. It's the same instinct that makes people squeeze that last dab of toothpaste out of the tube, clip coupons or turn the ketchup bottle upside down in the fridge to get that final drop.

Groves, a college student who is back home for the summer in North Platte, said she's tired of forking over more and more at the gas pumps. She said even though she can't directly control the price per gallon, she can make changes that will stretch her gas and help curb price increases.

Groves said by riding her bike two miles to her job at a garden store she is doing her own part to reduce demand for gas. If the overall consumer demand is reduced, she said, prices will start falling. "I think it's kind of (people) pulling together,'' she said. "We are all fighting it."

Linda Price, chairwoman of the marketing department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, said consumers want to feel they have control over how much they spend on gas or other products. Changing driving habits in response to rising gas prices is a natural consumer reaction, she said. "It's about not letting them win -- whoever 'them' is,'' Price said.

The desire for control grows as prices for products rise beyond what consumers consider a threshold level. And gas prices this spring, she said, are clearly high enough to increase that desire among consumers. "There is a strong impulse to get your money's worth,'' she said.

Compared with a year ago, the price per gallon for regular unleaded is up about 46 cents in Nebraska and Iowa. On a 15-gallon fill-up, that's an increase of nearly $7.

Miller, who lives in Ralston, bought a Ford Expedition two years ago, but now she's rethinking that decision. Lately she's paying nearly $49 to fill her thirsty SUV. "It irritates me,'' she said. Her rising gas costs are forcing her to consider trading her SUV for a four-cylinder car.

Nationally, sales in April for some of the biggest SUVs were down from last year, including the Expedition, Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Suburban, said David Lucas of Autodata, a New Jersey company that tracks vehicle sales. He said high gas prices are a factor in the decline.

AAA Nebraska says gas prices could keep rising through Memorial Day and beyond. Reasons for the rising prices include unrest in the Middle East, which is affecting oil production. Also, supplies of crude oil remain tight while worldwide demand continues to grow, including in countries such as China. When the market is tight, even small changes in supply can have a major effect on prices.

Margritz, who lives near 156th and Blondo Streets, said the rising gas prices have led him and his wife, Jo, to change their driving routines. Margritz, a retiree who drives his wife to work, used to head home after dropping her off and then run errands later in the day. Now after leaving her off at work he hits as many errands as he can on his route home. He also scouts for the best gas prices and lowers his speed on the Interstate to boost his mileage.

Margritz said the high prices require having a strategy, a game plan for keeping his gas expenses from getting out of hand. "I think we are pretty smart on that,'' he said.

The drive home after work or a long trip typically involves travel after the sun goes down.

While it may seem a routine final task before reaching the comfort of home, night driving requires as much, if not more, attention and diligence. Our driving reactions rely heavily on what we can see on the road up ahead. Depth perception, peripheral vision and color recognition all suffer after sundown.

And it's not just the driving conditions once darkness descends. Twilight likewise poses challenges to our vision and driving skills. It's not easy for our eyes to adapt quickly to the changing light.

The National Safety Council has come up with the following list of recommended steps to make driving in the dark more safe.

Before hitting the road for an upcoming night drive, clean headlights, taillights, signal lights and windows (inside and out) at least once a week.

Make sure your headlights are properly aimed. Not only can they impair your ability to see the road, nonaligned headlights can also blind other drivers headed toward you.

Don't drink and drive. We're warned about this all the time, and for good reason. Alcohol impairs driving skills and can induce fatigue.

Avoid smoking in the car. Nicotine and carbon monoxide from smoke hamper night vision.

Don't wait until it's totally dark before turning on the headlights. It will alert other drivers to your presence on the road.

Judging speed and distance from other vehicles at night is difficult, so reduce your speed and increase the distance between your car and the one up ahead.

Use low beams when following other cars. You don't want to blind a driver through his or her rearview mirror.

If faced by an oncoming vehicle with its high beams on, watch the right edge of the road and use it as a steering guide.

Pull off the road for a rest if you feel too tired to drive safely.

When car trouble strikes, such as a flat tire, pull off the road, well away from the nearest lane. Set up reflecting triangles near your vehicle and 300 feet behind it or use flares to warn approaching traffic of your presence. You can also flip on the flashers or the dome light inside the car. Don't allow passengers to wander away.

Night vision

Road safety suffers after sundown. To stay alert, make frequent stops for light snacks and to stretch your legs.

Drivers Can Take Steps to Cut Auto Premiums

SYRACUSE - A new study by the Insurance Information Institute (III) suggests that changing one's commuting habits can reduce insurance costs.

The Manhattan-based III says that as gasoline prices continue their recordbreaking climb, drivers might consider using public transportation or carpooling. If they do, not only could drivers save money on gas, but they could also save on auto insurance.

"Reducing the number of miles driven each week could also reduce auto-insurance premiums," says Alejandra Soto, a spokeswoman for the III. "Some insurance companies give discounts to motorists who drive less than a predetermined number of miles each year." A number of factors are considered to determine premiums, including a driver's safety record, the type of vehicle driven, and the number of miles driven per year.

Drivers that switch to public transportation should contact their insurance agent or company representative to inform them of this change. The insurance discount may not offset the impact of high gasoline prices, but it will save drivers money.

The III says that consumers can also reduce the cost of their auto-insurance rates by following these tips:

* Shop around and compare prices. Insurance costs vary dramatically from company to company. Also, don't buy based on price alone - pick a company or agent that has a reputation for good service.

* Before buying a car, check insurance costs. Insurance premiums are based in part on the car's value, the cost to repair it, its overall safety record, and the likelihood of theft.

* Raise the deductible. A higher deductible can lower the cost of insurance substantially. For example, increasing the deductible from $200 to $500 could reduce the collision and comprehensive coverage costs by 15 percent to 30 percent. Raising it to $1,000 can result in savings of 40 percent or more.

* Drop unnecessary coverage. Drop collision and/or comprehensive coverage on older cars. In many instances, it is not cost-effective to continue to buy these coverages as the value of a vehicle depreciates. Consult auto dealers, banks, and buyer's guides to find out the value of a car.

* Maintain good credit. Credit ratings may be used to determine the cost of insurance. And while this varies from state to state and company to company, drivers with a good credit history may be rewarded with a lower rate.

* Inquire about all available discounts. Carpooling to work, taking a defensive-driver-training course, or insuring multiple cars with the same insurer might result in discounts. Some companies also give discounts to students with good grades.

Reducing automobile mileage will have a different impact on insurance premiums for each driver, depending on individual circumstances and the insurance company, Soto says.

A: A trip to a new car dealer for service and repair is always a wise choice - assuming they will provide all the "must haves" that the Car Czar says they should.

They "must" have a competitive service department. This means that the service drive should not be there just because they "have" to perform warranty work on the new cars they sell. The service department should feel, well, like they really want to "service" you. This means that you are greeted promptly and politely. (That old-school practice of having to wait in line for a half hour in the service drive really bugs me.) They also "must" offer competitive pricing. Why should you pay more for dealer work? The answer is simple: You shouldn't.

A dealer's cost of doing business is comparable to the costs all shops face. Paying a "premium" for typical maintenance that we receive at a dealership is just not necessary. Certainly, you could successfully argue that you will have the benefit of a highly trained technician working on your car, but many great independent shops offer this as well.

My best advice is to shop around. Ask a lot of questions. Check out both dealerships and good AAA recommended independent shops. Chances are, your decision will be made for you after evaluating each shop on its merits, its pricing and its ability to intelligently and efficiently answer your questions and concerns.

Q: We recently moved, and our new house uses a well. The water is REALLY hard and leaves water spots no matter how fast you dry the car after washing. Is there an easy and cheap way to get these out? Waxing didn't even do it! It's hard to look good with those spots!

A: Although your water may be hard, the answer to your question is anything but. The real issue is not that water spots are appearing on your car, but why are you not able to remove them when drying it off? The answer is that your paint is unprotected.

You mention that you have tried waxing off these water spots, but the wax job should have come first. Car paint is very porous. As a result, it will allow the mineral deposits from the water to "tattoo" the color. The best solution here is to keep the problem from occurring in the first place. And this is best done by a good waxing or application of paint sealant at least twice a year. Do that, and those hard water deposits will wipe right off when you dry the car with a nice clean shammy (or "chamois" for you Francophiles) after you wash.

With regard to your problem, check with a good detail shop. A good buffing with a light compound may be in order. Follow that with a long overdue waxing, and that well water should pose no threat to your fine ride. cheap rims

Cell Phone Use Can Increase Accident Risk

You probably know that drinking and driving don't mix. Talking and driving don't mix, either. If you use a cell phone when you're driving, you increase your chances of having a crash.

In fact, drivers who use cell phones are 4 to 5 times more likely to have a crash than those who don't. If you need to use the phone, pull off the road to a safe place.

It's not the phone that's dangerous. It's the fact that while you're using it, you might be taking your eyes off the road or not concentrating on your driving. Anything that can distract you from driving is dangerous.

Attacked by a cell phone driver: Recently, while on the interstate in Memphis, I was the lead car in my lane. There were two other lanes to my right which were solid with cars. In the lane to my left a driver obviously just got a call on his cell phone.

He knew he was to pull off the highway, but he didn't realize (in those few seconds) that he was supposed to do so with care. He just swerved across three packed lanes of traffic, to reach the safety of the shoulder. My car, and two cars on my right, all braked hard to avoid crashing into him.

Other Distractions: Other things that can take your concentration away from driving include:

-- Fiddling with the radio, a cigarette lighter, air-conditioner or heater buttons, cruise controls, windshield wipers.

-- Trying to get something from the floor or another seat.

-- Talking to other passengers (or having to listen to loud passengers).

-- Eating, reading, putting on makeup, shaving or other personal care.

Distractions while driving are hazardous enough without using a cell phone at the same time.

And it has been proven that using a hands-free phone is no safer than using a hand-held one.

As you stop on the shoulder, he pulls ahead, brakes, and yells with foaming-mouth venom. You don't know what you're doing! You wouldn't let him pass safely! You don't belong on the road!

Scary? Yeah, but at least your vehicle offers escape and protection if the driver goes psycho.

On a bicycle, things are different. Motorist road rage targeting a cyclist is akin to an Abrams tank aiming at an unarmed foot soldier. Survival becomes the goal. Justice becomes a theory.

Take the recent case recounted by a biking friend who shall remain nameless. I don't want the truck driver knocking on his door.

In the past three decades, my friend has logged tens of thousands of miles, from New York City avenues to Vermont countryside to Luzerne County byways. He respects cars. He knows how to bike safely.

During a recent evening ride outside White Haven, he abruptly saw a truck tire inches from his pedal. There was no other vehicle in sight on the two-lane road. The driver could have passed safely and without incident, but opted to sidle up to my buddy and slow down, forcing him into the gravel.

The driver pulled ahead, stopped to yell without getting out of his truck, and drove off. End of story? Not quite.

My friend had a license plate number, so when he got home he called the state police.

"They told me to call the White Haven police," my friend recounted. "I told them it didn't happen in White Haven.

"They asked, did you provoke him in any way, like make an obscene gesture? I said no, he came out of nowhere, forced me off the road and started screaming and threatening me."

Police asked if he could identify the driver. "I said, how could I? I wasn't going to go up and lean into the window of the truck when he's acting like a crazy man. I kept my distance."

The cops said the license number wasn't enough. The owner of the truck wasn't necessarily the one driving. My friend could have filed a complaint, but it was pointless. With no witnesses and no solid look at the culprit, it would be his word against the driver.

His conversation with police ended on this note: "I said, you're telling me that there's a crazy person out there forcing people off the road, and you're not doing anything about it?"

Well, yeah. That's basically what police were saying, and I understand their dilemma. Their inability to do anything is frustrating, but its not the real problem.

I'll never understand why bikers and drivers clash. Drivers need to remember that cyclists have a legal right to the road. Cyclists need to remember they have the same responsibilities as drivers. Most adult cyclists, by the way, are drivers.

I've said it before, but it's worth repeating. When you see a bike on the road, especially one obeying the traffic rules, try to imagine the rider is a spouse, or child, or loved one.

We don't want to be treated special, we just want to be treated fairly.

Some members of Big Auto and Big Oil are at loggerheads over the quality of gasoline pumped into automobiles in this country.

A consortium of major automakers, citing persistent repair problems and troubling product tests, recently concluded that the quality of U.S. gasoline varies widely and often doesn't burn clean enough to keep engines running smoothly.

And now, in a move that is roiling much of the oil industry, General Motors, Honda, Toyota and BMW have banded together to push a new industry fuel standard. If that standard is adopted, it will increase levels of gasoline additives that prevent deposits on intake valves and fuel injectors that foul engines and affect performance, emissions and fuel economy.

The new class of fuel, dubbed "Top Tier Detergent Gasoline," is a voluntary standard that exceeds the current standard set by the Environmental Protection Agency. But gas marketers, under pressure from automakers, may find it hard to ignore, since it could put them at a competitive disadvantage.

Gasoline sold by QuikTrip -- the area's biggest fuel marketer -- already meets the Top Tier criteria. ChevronTexaco, which has no retail presence in the area, also has adopted the standard. Other companies, including Shell Oil, have plans to meet the new standard.

The push comes as the automakers say they are seeing persistent problems such as clogged fuel injectors and as they begin to introduce a new generation of vehicles engineered to meet tougher environmental standards. Those new vehicles especially will need fuel with more additives.

The automakers are buttressing their case with an industry analysis that tested fuel samples taken from cities across the country -- including Kansas City. It shows detergent levels in gasoline dropping nearly 50 percent since 1996.

"We've just felt for a long time that gasoline detergency was not at a proper level," said Andrew Buczynsky, a GM fuel engineer.

The American Petroleum Institute, an association that represents the oil industry, said it was surprised and disappointed by the automakers' decision to push Top Tier without seeking the advice of oil companies. The association has sent a letter to the automakers seeking the data used to back their allegations and offering to conduct additional gasoline tests.

"At this point, we're waiting for a response," said Ed Murphy, downstream manager for the American Petroleum Institute.

Top Tier is intended to give motorists greater comfort that the fuel they buy has sufficient cleaning ability. Experts say the cost of adding the needed detergents is a fraction of a cent per gallon.

The controversy over the quality of gasoline challenges the widely held belief that all gasoline is about the same.

The auto industry analysis reveals that different brands have different detergent levels. And while all gasoline is thought to at least meet the EPA's minimum standard for detergents, the automakers say that level is often insufficient to keep engines clean.

Although the cost of introducing Top Tier gasoline would be minimal for consumers, it could threaten how some oil companies market premium fuel, which costs about 20 cents more per gallon than regular gas.

Premium accounts for about 15 percent of gasoline sales, but experts estimate that demand for premium would fall to about 5 percent if only cars that needed the extra octane used premium.

Some oil companies have sought to increase sales of premium by touting that it contains a higher level of detergents. But Top Tier will blur that advantage, since all grades, including regular, will have to meet the new standard if a marketer wants to participate in the program.

So far, Top Tier gas has received scant attention. But that is expected to change as it is included in gasoline marketing.

Automakers plan to publicize a list of gas companies offering the fuel and are developing a Top Tier logo for gas pumps. They have created a Web site at www.toptiergas.com.

Groups such as the American Automobile Association are beginning to hear about the new fuel standard. AAA is currently considering whether to support the Top Tier program.

"We have the same basic concerns that the automakers have," said Michael Hecht, manager of technical services for AAA Auto Club of Missouri. "We support it."

Questions about fuel quality once seemed settled.

In the 1980s, additives became an issue when fuel injection became popular in new cars and trucks. The injectors often became clogged, and the problem was traced to gasoline with insufficient detergent additives.

Automakers began to publish "good gas" lists. The lists were eventually dropped at the urging of some gas marketers, but by then the problem had eased.

Still, some gas companies weren't using detergents and, in a move supported by the auto industry, federal regulators mandated specific levels of the additives. The EPA finalized the regulation in 1997.

But something happened after the new regulation took effect: The amount of detergents in the nation's gas supply dropped sharply.

The Alliance for Automobile Manufacturers twice a year takes gasoline samples in 26 U.S. cities -- including Kansas City. One of the tests is for "unwashed gum," which is an indicator of the amount of detergents in gasoline.

In the winter following the EPA standard going into effect, according to AAM tests, unwashed gum levels in regular gas dropped more than 20 percent. By 2002, gum levels had declined about 50 percent. Although recent tests show slightly higher levels, they are still low.

Joe Colucci, a retired director of research and development at GM who now operates Automotive Fuels Consulting, said reducing detergent additives to the EPA regulation level was seen by some companies as a way to reduce costs. Although detergents cost only a fraction of a cent per gallon, it adds up to an enormous sum because of the huge volume of gas sold.

"They would say to themselves, 'We'll meet the letter of the law,' and that's what has happened with much of the gasoline," Colucci said.

By 2002, the automakers say repair records suggested that the EPA standard for detergents wasn't high enough. They approached the EPA about increasing gasoline detergents, but say they were rebuffed.

"We would have liked to have had some leadership from the EPA, but we just haven't been able to get that," said John Cabaniss, a director of engineering at the International Auto Manufacturers Association.

An EPA spokesman said the agency was unaware of the industry attempt to improve the fuel standard. He said the agency's program mandates that certified detergents be used and in what amounts.

"The program is working well," said EPA spokesman David Ryan.

But questions about the EPA standard appear to have been the focus of growing concern at industry forums, such as an vehicle emissions conference in Chattanooga ,Tenn., late last year attended by oil and auto companies.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers described "continuing problems from inadequate additives use" and said the EPA needs to update its regulations, according to information presented at the conference. Another speaker said he was seeing problems with fuel injector fouling even when the fuel met EPA requirements.

Some oil companies question the standard as well.

Shell Oil estimates that 60 percent of the fuel sold in the United States is at or near the "EPA minimum level of detergency" and says that has caused problems in some cars.

"We have measured significant deposit buildup in certain vehicles in as little as 5,000 miles," Shell stated in one document.

Early this year, GM approached Honda, Toyota and BMW to join in an effort to improve gasoline detergent levels. GM believed that an organized group rather than a lone automaker would show the seriousness of the issue.

The move came at a time when automakers were beginning to produce vehicles to meet the EPA's "Tier 2" environmental standards for reduced emissions. Such vehicles need quality fuel to avoid reduced performance.

"We feel high detergency is preferable," said Douglas McGregor, an emissions compliance engineer for BMW.

In early April, the American Petroleum Institute held a meeting in Detroit for the oil and auto industries. A week before the meeting, the association received a letter stating that the four automakers would be discussing the Top Tier program.

"We were disappointed," said Murphy of the petroleum institute, adding that his group didn't know Top Tier was even in the works before receiving the letter.

The oil industry wasn't given an opportunity to give its advice, Murphy said, adding that a new fuel standard typically involves cooperation between the industries.

But collaboration is unlikely. The automakers say they have previously reached out to the oil industry with concerns, but nothing happened. As a result, the automakers decided to proceed unilaterally with a new fuel standard.

"Frankly, we didn't want too much input," said Buczynsky, of GM. "Because when we have, it would always drop down to the bare minimum."

The Top Tier standard was modeled after California's fuel quality regulations, which allow half the deposits on intake valves that the federal rules permit. Buczynsky said the amount of detergents in Top Tier-certified gasoline will be two to three times the current EPA standard.

While some brands of gas currently have more than the EPA standard, according to the auto industry's testing, there are many at the minimum level of detergent.

A gasoline marketer who wants to meet the Top Tier standard must do it for all grades -- not just premium -- and make it available at all stations.

While meeting the standard will require testing, automakers say they strive to minimize costs. Despite the additional detergents, the cost is expected to be a fraction of a cent per gallon.

But the Society of Independent Gas Marketers of America fears that any additional costs could prevent some members from offering the Top Tier gas.

"A fraction of a cent can be a substantial part of your profit," said Tom Osborne, a spokesman for the group.

The independent marketers group, however, has invited a GM representative to address its members. The society's staff also has been instructed to begin helping members who want to participate in the Top Tier program. One of its major members, QuikTrip, already has qualified for the Top Tier program.

More major brands are expected to make similar announcements so competitors don't get an edge. Shell plans to have all grades of its gas certified Top Tier this summer.

You've probably experienced the feeling behind the wheel. Your eyelids become heavy, and you have trouble keeping your head up. Maybe you don't even remember driving the last few miles.

Last year in Nebraska, 432 crashes were attributed to driver fatigue or to drivers falling asleep at the wheel. Of those crashes, three resulted in fatalities and 208 in injuries. Such crashes remain a serious concern among state safety officials, but there have been improvements. The number of total crashes has dropped about 21 percent since 1999.

Fred Zwonechek, administrator of the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety, said the decline probably is because of rumble strips the state added along Interstate 80 in 2001 and 2002.

The strips, which cost $2.3 million, are along the shoulder. Tires vibrate when they hit the rumble strips, which are grooves cut into the shoulder. The Nebraska Department of Roads added the strips after reviewing national studies that showed their effectiveness.

Even though the number of crashes has fallen, motorists still must be careful. Spring and summer are high-risk times for such accidents as more people take to the road for vacations.

In May, a Denver girl died in an accident on I-80 near North Platte after her father apparently fell asleep at the wheel, authorities said.

Every year, drivers who fall asleep cause at least 100,000 crashes nationally, 40,000 injuries and 1,550 fatalities. Zwonechek said drivers should remember that accidents involving drowsy drivers can happen during the day as well as at night.

A national survey showed that 26 percent of drivers reported becoming drowsy while driving between noon and 5 p.m. Here are some danger signs of drowsy driving, along with tips for staying alert on the road, all from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety:

- Your eyes close or go out of focus by themselves.

- You have wandering, disconnected thoughts.

- You don't remember the last few miles.

- Your vehicle drifts between lanes.

Staying alert:

- Start any trip by getting enough sleep the night before.

- Talk with a passenger.

- Take a break every two hours or every 100 miles.

- Pull over to a safe spot and take a nap.
